Fighting Infection
- Chemical Debreedments —Debreedments are treatments that remove dead tissue or foreign matter from a wound . We use papain-urea mixtures, sometimes with the addition of chlorophyllin copper. Although many physicians are familiar with these medications, few know how to use them or when.
- Wound Healing Medications—We are evaluating a patent-pending urea mixture called DermaWound. We also frequently use Regranex, a growth hormone that works like a spark plug to start tissue healing.
- Silver—We apply bandages impregnated with silver to kill microbes without harming healing tissue. Silver reduces bacteria and matrix metallic protease (MMP), an enzyme that inhibits wound healing.
- Maggots—Though seldom used, maggots are fantastic little surgeons that eat only the infection and necrotic tissue.
